Lesson 3 — Bonuses and Incentives
Lesson 3 — Bonuses and Incentives
Bonuses are real money, but most are conditional. Know what is guaranteed and what you have to earn.

Bonuses are real — but read the conditions
Bonuses can add up to real money, but most are conditional: you earn them by doing something or by staying somewhere. Before you count on a bonus, find out exactly when it pays and what cancels it.
Sign-on bonus
Paid for joining — for example, $1,000. The catch is usually the schedule: a sign-on bonus is often paid in pieces over time, not all at once on your first day. Ask how and when it is paid.
Stay-on-the-road / tenure bonus
Paid for staying out on the road and not quitting early — for example, $2,200 after six straight weeks and $2,300 after ten. It rewards drivers who stick. Ask how long you have to stay and what counts.
Clean-inspection bonus
Paid when you pass a DOT roadside inspection with no violations — often tiered, for example $100, $300, and $500. Safe, sharp drivers get paid for it, and this one is fully in your control.
Referral bonus
Paid when you bring in another qualified driver or team who actually sticks — for example, $500 per team once they have worked about a month. If you know good drivers, this is found money.
The catch to watch
For every bonus, ask two questions: when exactly is it paid, and what do I have to do or avoid to keep it? A bonus you cannot actually collect is not part of your pay.
📋 Sample Quiz Questions (Preview)
Five questions cover the lesson above. The actual quiz requires a login to record a grade — these previews are open to everyone.
1. What is true of most driver bonuses?
Why: Most bonuses are conditional. Always learn when each pays and what cancels it before counting on it.
2. What is the common catch with a sign-on bonus?
Why: Sign-on bonuses are frequently paid in installments. Ask the schedule — installments are very different from a lump sum.
3. What does a stay-on-the-road / tenure bonus reward?
Why: Tenure bonuses reward drivers who stay. Ask how long you must stay and what counts.
4. Which bonus is most directly in your own control?
Why: A clean roadside inspection is on you — safe, sharp driving earns it directly.
5. For every bonus, what two things should you ask?
Why: A bonus is only worth what you can actually collect, so it is worth confirming the timing and the conditions.
